Alcohol has a persistent reputation as a sleep aid. A glass of wine unwinds a tense day, a nightcap smooths the transition to bed, and both feel like they work. The subjective experience is not wrong. Alcohol does help most people fall asleep faster. What it does after that, over the second half of the night, is where the story turns, and where a body of consistent research argues the opposite of what the feeling suggests.
Understanding the mechanics helps explain why a night of drinking can leave you groggy, low, and unfocused even when you spent a full eight hours in bed.
What alcohol does in the first half of the night
Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant. Shortly after drinking, it enhances GABA activity (the brain's main inhibitory signal) and suppresses glutamate (the main excitatory signal). The net effect is sedation, which feels like sleepiness and shortens the time it takes to fall asleep.
Alcohol also pushes the sleeper more quickly into deep (N3) sleep, and often produces more slow-wave activity in the first hour or two than would occur without it. This is the piece that makes people say alcohol helps them sleep. In the first ninety minutes, it does.
What alcohol does in the second half of the night
As blood alcohol drops during metabolism, the picture reverses. The body enters a rebound state: sympathetic nervous system activity rises, sleep becomes lighter and more fragmented, and REM sleep, which was suppressed early in the night, tries to rebound but does so incompletely and unevenly.
The second half of the night after drinking looks nothing like a healthy second half. Awakenings increase. Heart rate stays elevated. Body temperature runs warmer than baseline. REM is fragmented, and the vivid, sometimes anxious dreams that many drinkers notice in the pre-dawn hours are one visible consequence.
Alcohol borrows deep sleep from the first half of the night and pays it back with fragmented, REM-poor sleep in the second half. The exchange is not favorable.
Why you still feel tired after eight hours
Total time in bed is a bad measure of sleep quality after drinking. Alcohol and other sleep problems
Alcohol worsens most sleep disorders. It relaxes upper airway muscles, which increases the frequency and severity of sleep apnea events, sometimes dramatically. It worsens restless legs symptoms in many people. It can trigger nighttime awakenings in people with reflux. And for people with insomnia, it locks in a pattern where the substance that helps them fall asleep is also the substance keeping them from staying asleep, a self-reinforcing loop that CBT-I clinicians see constantly.
In pregnancy, no amount of alcohol is considered safe. For people on sedating medications, the combination can be dangerous, alcohol amplifies the effect and increases the risk of respiratory suppression during sleep.

Alcohol trades a fast, sedated first half of the night for a fragmented, REM-poor second half. The feeling that it helps you sleep is real but incomplete, it describes only the onset, not the shape of the night that follows. If you drink, an earlier last drink and a smaller total dose meaningfully soften the impact.
